The beginning
Nelly Applebys started in October 2003 taking over the existing business of Quality Crafts, in Irk Street Gore. It started with approx 300 patchwork fabrics and has grown to over 3000 now. I had always had an interest in crafts. Even though as my mother Felicity, would say she could not sew a straight line so I didn't pick up any guidance there. I had been previously selling Teddy Bear Fur etc from home and this has been incorporated into Nelly's. So over the past 5 years I have been thrown into the deep end as far as patchwork and quilting goes but I have totally had a ball. As a special mention I would like to thank the talented ladies who have helped me learn the patchwork skills needed and that have willingly shared their knowledge.
The kids
I must admit the time has flown by. When I took over the shop my eldest Laura was just 6 and my 'baby' boy was only 4. Different story now! Laura now 11 is always wanting scrap fabric for something. She has made some projects and enjoys getting control of the sewing machine. Blair well he is growing up fast, now 9 and cheeky as ever. They are both a danger to have around when sales reps call as they have very firm opinions on what they do and don't like in fabric designs.
The move
During 2006 the opportunity arose to purchase the current shop premises. The old villa lends itself very nicely in becoming a patchworkers hangout. It was a bit embarassing just prior to shifting as the building definately looked like to should have been knocked down rather than converted - so some customers were very shocked. However it has proved to be worth the effort and inside has taken shape nicely. The exterior is also looking much better as the old white paint is spruced up with sage green. Thanks Mike for getting all the high bits - I definately like my feet on the ground.
